A note on terminology

The words people use to describe themselves evolve over time.  "African American" is the term most commonly used in 2010, but students should expect to see and if necessary use other terms, such as "Black" and "Negro."  "Black Deaf" is commonly used among Deaf people.

Terms also change for people we currently call "Native Americans."  In the past they were called "Indians," and our own catalog uses "Indians of North America."  You may also look for more specific information about tribes by using the names of tribes, such as "Cherokee" or "Hopi."
